Luke writes Chinese Influence On Hollywood
China has become one of the leading markets in world cinema
, in 2018 2 out of top 5 movies around
the world are from china .Most importantly in this review we are not focus about Chinese cinema but on the
influence and power china hold on Hollywood .
In 2016 China bring 6.6 Billion for Hollywood out of 38.6
billion from worldwide. USA total; box office was 11.4 Billion in this rate in
next 10 years china can be a largest
market for Hollywood and even surpass America for American movies . One
thing that has hold china so far is the government regulations put in
China specially the Quota system where only 34 foreign language movies can be
screen for whole year (including American, Indian, and other Asian movies) This
initiative try to save the local film industry from Hollywood movies
. Most of the Hollywood blockbusters open month late in
China most of the times except for the onces which post production done in
China .
Many Hollywood movies have changed some aspects in order to
play in china “World War Z” deleted a line in which characters debate whether
the zombie pandemic sweeping the world originated in China. The arcade game
film “Pixels” lost a scene where aliens blast a hole in the Great Wall. And in
the most absurd recent example, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” featured the white
British actress Tilda Swinton playing a Tibetan character, because the film’s
screenwriter C. Robert Cargill felt that would be less controversial than
casting someone who looked ethnically Chinese or Tibetan.
Many movies such as Transformers which is failing now in
America running success because of china so the film it self added a whole act
for Chinese bait .it is important to
point of that Pacific Rim which is hugely unsuccessful in America was saved by
china and even went into making a sequel thanks to the Chinese Wanda group
buying the Legendary pictures . Anyway
china’s billionaires plans were halted recently due to government crack down
, China’s Dalian Wanda Group, which has
in recent years aggressively sought to invest heavily in Hollywood, has now
halted any plans for overseas investment, according to the company’s chairman Wang
Jianlin Speaking to Chinese financial outlet the Chinese billionaire said that Wanda would
instead switch its investment focus to the domestic market after the recent
regulatory crackdown that has hit the company.
In 2016, screenwriter Cargill explained why “Doctor Strange”
censored itself: “If you acknowledge that Tibet is a place,” he said, “you risk
alienating one billion people.”
Another important factor is the only 13% of the box office
earning in china can be taken back to Hollywood
studios until very recently now they agree to give 25% of total box office
earning .
With all those aspects its has been clear that
Chinese cinema can sustain without America due to their population but it’s questionable
the Hollywood’s ability to sustain
without China
